WA's E-Waste to Landfill Ban
What it means for Perth businesses, schools and government sites
Since 1 July 2024, WA's e-waste to landfill ban has stopped regulated e-waste from going straight to landfill. It's aimed at "significant" businesses — those with 200+ employees or generating 5+ tonnes of e-waste a year — plus public entities and local government, though any Perth business, school or household is welcome to sell to us regardless of whether the ban legally applies to them.
Organisations bound by the ban must transfer e-waste to an e-waste service provider, keep disposal records for at least 5 years, and be able to produce them within 28 days if a regulator asks — with fines of up to $10,000 per breach for non-compliance.
Effective 1 July 2024
WA's e-waste to landfill ban prohibits sending regulated e-waste to landfill under the Waste Avoidance and Resource Recovery (e-waste) Regulations 2024.
Who's Bound
"Significant" businesses (200+ employees or 5+ tonnes of e-waste a year) and public entities and local government must comply — not every business, and households are excluded.
Reuse First
The Regulations point to AS 5377:2022 as the standard for "reasonable steps" — prioritising reuse and resale over destruction wherever possible.
